IGP DISU LAUNCHES FRESH CLAMPDOWN ON POLICE OFFICERS' UNAUTHORIZED SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a strong directive to all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, ordering them to immediately cease unauthorized social media activities capable of undermining the image, professionalism, and integrity of the Force.
The directive, issued on June 23, 2026, comes amid growing concerns over the increasing number of police officers creating videos, conducting live broadcasts, and sharing content online while in uniform or in circumstances that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force.
Why the IGP Issued the Directive
According to the Police High Command, social media remains an important tool for communication, information sharing, and public engagement. However, the Inspector-General emphasized that all personnel must operate within the provisions of existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
The directive seeks to address activities that may expose the Force to reputational damage or compromise operational security.
Activities Officers Are Now Prohibited From Doing
Under the directive, police officers are prohibited from:
- Posting unauthorized videos or photographs while in police uniform
- Conducting live broadcasts without official approval
- Publicly commenting on official police matters
- Disclosing sensitive operational information
- Using police status for personal branding or promotion
- Participating in entertainment-related content that could diminish the image of the Force
- Using official positions for commercial gain on social media
The IGP stressed that officers must maintain professionalism both online and offline.
Commissioners and Commanders Ordered to Enforce Compliance
To ensure immediate compliance nationwide, Commissioners of Police, Commanders, Departmental Heads, and Supervisory Officers have been directed to sensitize personnel under their commands and strictly enforce the directive.
The Inspector-General warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable if violations occur within their jurisdictions and no corrective action is taken.
Police Intelligence and X-Squad to Monitor Social Media
As part of the enforcement strategy, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) have been tasked with intensifying surveillance of social media platforms.
Their mandate includes identifying officers whose online conduct falls below the standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.
The monitoring exercise is expected to cover multiple social media platforms where police-related content is frequently shared.
Nigeria Police Reaffirm Commitment to Professionalism
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to discipline, responsible communication, professionalism, and maintaining public trust.
The Force emphasized that while social media remains a valuable engagement tool, officers must ensure their online activities reflect the values and standards of the institution.
The directive was conveyed in an official statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
