With the Osun State Governorship Election just days away, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, PSC(+), NPM, has stepped up consultations with key stakeholders to strengthen security and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The IGP on 7th August 2026 met with representatives of several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to discuss security concerns surrounding the election scheduled for 15th August 2026.

The delegation, led by Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC, included representatives from YIAGA Africa, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Kimpact Development Initiative, Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, Partners West Africa, CLEEN Foundation and other organisations.

During the engagement, the CSOs presented observations and recommendations covering critical issues such as voter protection, political violence, misinformation and the participation of vulnerable groups.

The IGP assured the delegation that the concerns raised would receive due consideration and that necessary measures would be taken to address identified security challenges.

Police Promise Adequate Deployment

IGP Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, impartiality and neutrality throughout the election.

He assured stakeholders that adequate Police personnel would be deployed to polling units, with particular attention to the needs of persons with disabilities, to ensure they can participate safely in the democratic process.

The IGP described the Osun election as particularly significant because it is expected to be the last off-cycle election before the 2027 General Elections, making a peaceful and credible process important for strengthening public confidence in Nigeria's democracy.

He also called on political actors, security stakeholders, civil society organisations and members of the public to work together to ensure a peaceful election.

The IGP further encouraged CSOs to continue sharing credible information with the Police and to promote responsible public communication before, during and after the election.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening operational preparedness and protecting the democratic process throughout the electoral period.
