RIVERS POLICE BEGIN OPERATION VELVET! STRICT TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT STARTS AUGUST 17

The Rivers State Police Command has announced the commencement of strict enforcement of OPERATION VELVET across the State from Monday, 17th August 2026, in a renewed effort to tackle traffic violations, reduce congestion and improve road safety.

The operation is being implemented in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, PSC(+), NPM, following concerns over the growing disregard for traffic laws and regulations.

According to the Command, violations of traffic rules have contributed to gridlocks, obstruction of traffic flow and avoidable risks to motorists, passengers and other road users.

Traffic Offenders Face Sanctions

The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, PSC, MNIPS, FCAI, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure effective enforcement of OPERATION VELVET within their respective areas of responsibility.

Traffic offenders may face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law, including arrest, impoundment of vehicles and prosecution where necessary.

The Command is therefore urging motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to strictly obey traffic regulations and cooperate with Police personnel during the exercise.

Police Officers Warned Against Extortion

While ordering strict enforcement, CP Adepoju has also issued a strong warning to officers participating in the operation.

Officers have been directed to carry out their duties professionally and lawfully and to respect the fundamental human rights and dignity of members of the public.

The Commissioner warned against extortion, harassment, intimidation, brutality, abuse of office and other forms of unprofessional conduct, stressing that any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary action.

Public Urged To Report Misconduct

Members of the public are encouraged to report traffic-related emergencies, police misconduct, extortion, human-rights violations and other incidents requiring urgent intervention through the Command's official emergency contacts.

The Rivers State Police Command says OPERATION VELVET is aimed at achieving safer roads, smoother traffic flow, effective policing and greater compliance with traffic laws across the State.

The Command therefore calls on all road users to cooperate with the Police and make road safety a collective responsibility.
