Ransom Paid, Life Taken: How Police Tracked a Kidnapper to an ‘Evil Forest’ in Rivers State

In a chilling breakthrough that has sent shockwaves across Rivers State, operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested a suspected kidnapper and murderer whose confession led to the recovery of a young woman’s decomposing remains from a secluded forest described by locals as an “evil forest.”

How the Tragic Ordeal Began

The suspect, Goodnews Iberi, 26, a native of Rumuakunde Community in Emohua Local Government Area, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Rita Special Eleonu, a 25-year-old woman from Rumuekini Community in Obio/Akpor LGA.

According to police reports, Rita was lured on December 13, 2025, by Iberi and four accomplices—currently at large—to the Rumuakunde axis of Emohua. What began as a trap quickly turned deadly, as she was kidnapped and taken to a remote forest along the East–West Road.

Ransom Collected, Victim Killed

In a disturbing twist, the suspects reportedly collected ₦210,000 in ransom from the victim’s family. Despite the payment, Rita was brutally murdered and her body dumped in the forest.

The crime came to light after the victim’s brother filed a distress report on December 29, 2025, prompting an intensive investigation by the Police.

Intelligence-Led Policing Leads to Arrest

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU), Emohua Annex, launched a targeted operation. On January 8, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., they arrested Iberi at his hideout.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime, revealing his role and naming four other accomplices who are now being hunted by security agencies.

Gruesome Discovery in the Forest

In a chilling development, Iberi led police operatives to the forest where Rita’s decomposing remains were recovered. The body has since been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) Morgue for autopsy.

Police Vow to Track Remaining Suspects

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, praised the professionalism and swift response of the operatives involved. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to fighting crime and dismantling kidnapping syndicates across Rivers State.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, while efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining members of the gang.

Call for Public Support

Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to the Police, as community cooperation remains key to preventing and solving crimes.
