IGP DISU SAYS TECHNOLOGY IS AN OPERATIONAL NECESSITY FOR MODERN POLICING AT UNCOPS 2026

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has declared that technological innovation is no longer optional but an operational necessity for modern policing as criminal networks continue to exploit advanced digital tools across international borders.

Speaking at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from July 7 to 8, 2026, the IGP highlighted the urgent need for law enforcement agencies worldwide to embrace emerging technologies while maintaining public trust.

Addressing ministers, inspectors-general of police, chiefs of police, and senior law enforcement officials from around the world, Disu said leading the Nigeria Police Force, which serves more than 230 million people, has given him firsthand experience of the challenges posed by the rapid digital transformation of policing.

According to the IGP, today's criminal organizations increasingly rely on artificial intelligence, encrypted communications, and cyber-enabled fraud to carry out sophisticated cross-border crimes, making innovation essential for effective law enforcement.

He explained that technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital forensics, and predictive intelligence are transforming the way police agencies anticipate threats, investigate crimes, and protect vulnerable communities.

However, Disu emphasized that while technology can significantly improve policing, it should never replace the trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

He stressed that the legitimacy of every police institution depends on public confidence, adding that innovation must strengthen transparency, accountability, respect for human rights, and the rule of law rather than undermine them.

The Inspector-General also called for stronger international cooperation, urging that technological advancements should not remain limited to a few developed nations. He advocated for greater capacity building and equitable access to digital policing capabilities across all United Nations member states.

According to him, the future of UN policing should be built on responsible innovation, visionary leadership, and meaningful global collaboration capable of delivering safer and more inclusive societies.

Disu further commended the United Nations Police for organizing the summit, describing UNCOPS 2026 as an important platform for shaping the future of international policing and strengthening cooperation among law enforcement agencies worldwide.

The summit convened senior government officials, police leaders, and representatives of regional and international policing organizations to discuss practical strategies for enhancing global peace, security, and sustainable development through stronger collaboration between national police services and the United Nations.
