The announcement, made in a State House press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, marks a significant transition within the Nigeria Police Force at a time when the nation continues to grapple with evolving security challenges.

Why Did Egbetokun Step Down?

According to the official statement, Mr. Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter citing pressing family considerations. President Tinubu received the letter earlier today and expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to both the Police Force and the nation.

Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

The President commended his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture throughout his tenure.

Tunji Disu Steps In

With immediate effect, AIG Tunji Disu has been appointed as Acting Inspector-General of Police. President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s operational depth, leadership experience, and capacity to provide steady direction for the Force during what he described as a critical period.

Disu’s appointment is seen as a strategic move aimed at ensuring continuity and stability within the nation’s policing system.

What Happens Next?

In accordance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following this process, his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

Tinubu Reaffirms Security Commitment

The President reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to:

Enhancing national security

Strengthening institutional capacity

Ensuring professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force

As Nigeria faces ongoing security concerns across various regions, this leadership transition signals a new chapter for the country’s top law enforcement agency.
