Trader Fatally Stabbed at Oil Mill Fruit Market as Rivers Police Arrest Suspect

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a tragic murder incident that occurred on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at about 7:00 a.m., at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt.

How the Incident Occurred

According to preliminary investigations, the incident began as a minor disagreement between a trader and a wheelbarrow pusher within the busy market environment.

Police reports indicate that the trader, while attempting to create additional space for his goods, requested the wheelbarrow pusher — identified as Zakara Afaaruwu (male) — to move his wheelbarrow, which was reportedly obstructing the area. The request was allegedly refused, leading to an argument between both parties.

In the course of the altercation, the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly stabbed the trader with a dagger.

Victim Identified

The victim, identified as Higightor Wenem (male), aged 30, a native of Mbagel Village, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, was immediately rushed to the Military Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was confirmed dead by the attending doctor. His remains have been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

Police Intervention Prevents Escalation

The incident reportedly triggered tension and panic within the market, resulting in unrest between members of the Hausa and Benue communities in the area.

However, swift intervention by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command restored calm and prevented a further breakdown of law and order.

Suspect Arrested

Police authorities confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations into the matter continue.

Security monitoring around the Oil Mill axis has been intensified, with the Command assuring residents that the situation is fully under control.

MURDER AND ARREST OF SUSPECT .


The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a murder incident that occurred today, Saturday, 14th February, 2026, at about 7:00 a.m. at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt.


Preliminary investigation revealed that a trader at the market, while attempting to create more space for his goods, requested a wheelbarrow pusher identified as Zakara Afaaruwu ‘m’ to remove his wheelbarrow which was obstructing the area. The request was refused, and an argument ensued.


In the course of the disagreement, the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly stabbed the trader, identified as Higightor Wenem ‘m’ aged 30 years, from Mbagel Village, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, with a dagger.


The victim was immediately rushed to the Military Hospital for medical attention but was confirmed dead by the medical Doctor . His corpse has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.


The incident led to tension and pandemonium between members of the Hausa and Benue communities in the area. However, prompt intervention by police operatives restored calm and prevented further breakdown of law and order.


The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody while investigation continues.
