In a dramatic late-night operation that underscores the Rivers State Police Command’s zero-tolerance stance on crime, operatives have dismantled a notorious kidnapping ring operating across parts of Etche Local Government Area. The operation led to the arrest—and eventual fatal wounding—of two key suspects, the recovery of a pump-action gun, and the seizure of ₦2.38 million in ransom money.

Kidnapping That Sparked the Manhunt

The breakthrough followed the January 19, 2026 kidnapping of a female victim and three others at Elele Waterside, Etche LGA. Acting swiftly on credible intelligence, operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU), Emohua Annex, tracked the suspects’ movements.

On January 22, 2026, at about 8:49 p.m., the suspects were intercepted along the Ozuzu/Apara Link Road.

Suspects Arrested With Ransom Cash

The arrested suspects were identified as:

• Abdullahi Ibrahim, 23, from Avara LGA, Nasarawa State
• Mohammed Hashim, 27, from Tafawa Balewa LGA, Bauchi State

A search revealed they were in possession of ₦2,383,000, confirmed to be part of the ransom paid by victims’ families.

Confession Reveals Deadlier Crimes

During interrogation, the suspects confessed not only to the Elele Waterside kidnapping but also to other abductions, including the January 8, 2026 kidnapping of two female victims from Akpoku Community, Etche LGA.

Investigators also uncovered a tragic twist: a youth from the community was killed on January 13, 2026, while attempting to deliver a ransom of ₦3.8 million to the gang.

Fierce Gun Battle Ends the Syndicate

As investigations expanded, the suspects led police operatives to their hideouts. However, officers were met with heavy resistance from other gang members, triggering a fierce gun battle.

During the exchange, the arrested suspects were fatally wounded, while other members of the gang escaped into nearby bushes, some believed to be nursing gunshot injuries.

• One pump-action gun
• ₦2,383,000 in cash

The Police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are appealing to the public to report anyone seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds.

Police Vow Relentless Crackdown

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, commended the bravery and professionalism of the operatives involved. He reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to make Rivers State a hostile environment for kidnappers and violent criminals, stressing that no effort will be spared in tracking down remaining members of the syndicate.
