Gun Turns on Colleagues: Inside the Shocking Supermarket Shooting That Killed a Police Inspector in Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt was rocked by tragedy on Sunday, January 18, 2026, following a shocking incident that claimed the life of a serving police officer during an official duty assignment. The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of Inspector Ibrahim Sani, describing the incident as deeply distressing and unprecedented.

What Happened at the Supermarket

According to official accounts and preliminary investigations, the incident occurred at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt. Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda, both attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel when the tragedy unfolded.

The suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, a fellow police officer attached to 17 PMF and on special duty at Intels, Onne, allegedly opened fire on his colleagues, shooting them in the head and neck regions.

One Officer Dead, Another Fighting for Life

The injured officers were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for urgent medical attention. Sadly, Inspector Ibrahim Sani succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Daniel Dauda is currently receiving treatment and remains under medical care.

Inspector Sani’s body has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary, Port Harcourt, where an autopsy will be conducted.

Suspect Arrested, Investigation Underway

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that Inspector Victor Okus has been arrested and is currently in police custody. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has ordered a comprehensive, transparent investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

The suspect is expected to face an Orderly Room Trial and will subsequently be charged to court, as the Command assures the public that justice will be served.

CP Warns Officers on Firearms Handling

In response to the incident, CP Adepoju issued a strong reminder to officers across the Command, stressing that handling firearms is a serious responsibility, not a routine task. He emphasized the need for heightened caution to ensure personal safety and the safety of colleagues and civilians while on duty.

Police Mourn Fallen Officer

The Rivers State Police Command extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Inspector Ibrahim Sani. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and internal discipline, pledging to take all necessary measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
