PCRC Partners with University of Port Harcourt to Tackle Drug Abuse and Campus Crime
PCRC Strengthens Ties with University of Port Harcourt in Fight Against Drug Abuse and Campus Crime
On Tuesday, 26th August 2025, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Rivers State Command paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, at the Senate Building, Choba.
Leading the delegation was the State Chairman, Mr. Voke Emore, who highlighted the role of PCRC as a bridge between the Police and the community. He used the opportunity to introduce the Vice Chancellor to the organization’s activities and shared plans for a major initiative; the War Against Drug Abuse Rally, a collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), scheduled to take place within the University campus.
Vice Chancellor’s Warm Reception
Prof. Georgewill, who warmly received the PCRC delegation, admitted that this was his first time hearing about the PCRC, despite years of service at the helm of UNIPORT. He expressed delight at the visit and emphasized that the University is open to meaningful partnerships that would improve the welfare of students and surrounding communities.
The Vice Chancellor noted that issues such as drug abuse, cultism, and petty crimes remain pressing challenges in the University environment. He welcomed PCRC’s initiative and pledged institutional support to ensure the success of the upcoming rally and other future programs.
Focus on Students and Surrounding Communities
Prof. Georgewill stressed the importance of addressing not only campus security but also the welfare of nearby communities where most students reside. He expressed confidence that PCRC’s programs, especially its campaign against drug abuse, would significantly reduce crime rates, foster discipline among students, and improve relationships between law enforcement agencies and young people.
Next Steps: War Against Drug Abuse Rally
The War Against Drug Abuse Rally aims to create awareness among students on the dangers of substance abuse, offer preventive education, and mobilize youths as ambassadors of positive change. By collaborating with NDLEA, PCRC, and UNIPORT authorities, the campaign promises to be a landmark event in fostering a safer academic environment.
The courtesy visit marks the beginning of a strong partnership between the Police Community Relations Committee and the University of Port Harcourt. With the support of the Vice Chancellor and collaboration with NDLEA, the PCRC is set to make significant strides in tackling drug abuse, preventing crime, and strengthening community-police relations in Rivers State.
