50,000 POLICE JOBS UNDER WATCH: PSC RECRUITS PCRC AS ‘COMMUNITY WATCHDOGS’ TO STOP RECRUITMENT FRAUD

Nigeria’s largest police recruitment drive just got a major transparency boost.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has officially enlisted the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) as “community watchdogs” to help safeguard the recruitment process of 50,000 police constables into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The move was announced during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja, where officials gathered to finalize arrangements for the physical and credential screening exercise beginning Monday, March 9, 2026.

A Historic Recruitment Exercise

The ongoing recruitment of 50,000 constables is being described as the largest single intake in the history of the Nigeria Police Force. With such a massive recruitment exercise underway, the PSC says strong oversight is necessary to prevent fraud, favoritism, or infiltration by individuals with questionable backgrounds.

Chairing the meeting, PSC Chairman Hashimu Argungu emphasized that the credibility of the police force begins with the integrity of its recruitment process.

According to him, only the most qualified and trustworthy Nigerians should be allowed to wear the uniform.

“An effective Police Force is built on the quality of its recruitment,” he said. “This is why we have called upon the PCRC and other stakeholders to serve as guardians of this process.”

PCRC Given Major Oversight Role

Under the new arrangement, PCRC state chairmen across Nigeria will work closely with:

  • PSC officials
  • State Employment and Career Departments
  • The NPF State Intelligence Department (SID)

Their task will include verifying applicants’ indigene status, background, and character to ensure that criminal elements do not infiltrate the police force.

The PSC Chairman described PCRC members as “the eyes and ears of the community”, urging them to maintain the credibility of the recruitment exercise in their respective states.

PCRC Accepts the Challenge

Responding on behalf of PCRC leadership, Ibraheem Olaniyan was represented by the Deputy National President (North), Wada Abubakar Sadiq.

He thanked the PSC for trusting the organization with such a crucial responsibility and pledged that PCRC members nationwide would help ensure that only credible Nigerians are recruited into the police.

“We understand the weight of this responsibility,” he said. “We assure the Commission and the nation that we will justify the confidence reposed in us. We will remain vigilant.”

Key Stakeholders Present

The meeting brought together PCRC State Chairmen from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside key PSC leadership figures including:

  • Paul Adamu Galumje, PSC Commissioner representing the Judiciary
  • Taiwo Lakanu, Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Matters

Their participation underscores the national importance of the recruitment exercise.

A New Push for Transparent Policing

With screening now set to begin nationwide, the partnership between the PSC and PCRC is expected to play a vital role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and public trust in the recruitment process.

If successful, the initiative could mark a turning point in how Nigeria builds and strengthens its police force—starting from the very first step: who gets recruited.
